The Palcoyo are an indigenous tribe that live in what we now call the Rainbow Mountains, deep in the Peruvian Andes. When I decided to do this hike, I only knew there would be a local tribe with horses, ready to help those who struggled with the altitude reach the top, 5,050 meters.
What I saw when I arrived at the start of the hike was beyond words.
Like most of the series, I didn’t plan it. It happened spontaneously. I was completely amazed by the beauty of this place, but also by the people. The Palcoyo live almost entirely off the tourism in a small village down the mountains.Every day, they guide tourists to the peak, two or three times a day, for just a few pounds per ride. They live like the time has stopped 70 years ago.
